Frederick Vincent Knapp 1863 - 1945
Knapp was an amateur archaeologist, resident in Nelson. He was brought up at Spring Grove in Nelson. Knapp's career was as a school master. He had a strong interest in stone tools and his papers in the Journal of the Polynesian Society are predominantly about stone tools from around Nelson.
His personal collection which included material from the Pacific was housed at his home in Tipahi Street, Nelson up until his death. Its main focus was Nelson stone material. The collection was bequeathed to the Cawthron Institute Trust Board. Some items were displayed in the Nelson Provincial Museum with the bulk being held by Te Papa. The collection totals 4689 items.
In 2008 the collection was transferred to the ownership of the Tasman Bays Heritage Trust which operates the Nelson Provincial Museum.[1] [2]
Knapp's papers are in the Nelson Provincial Museum.
