"The first edition of this booklet was written by Aileen Fox and published by Cornwall Park in 1978. It was long out of print when Sue Bulmer, with Aileen’s approval, commenced a revision and enlargement. She was prevented by ill health in completing the task and this edition has been completed with the endorsement of her family."

"Maungakiekie is the largest and most imposing of the many Māori pā (fortified settlement sites) in Tāmaki Makau Rau (or Tāmaki for short), the Auckland district. Maungakiekie was the capital of Tāmaki in the mid 1700s, headquarters of a group of fortified terraced towns on the largest of the volcanic cones found in this district. It was first settled much earlier than that, at least by the 1400s, according to Māori traditional histories (David Simmons: 2013, Agnes Sullivan’s “Māori gardening in Tāmaki”). These were large central settlements on the cones, with gardens and other small settlements in the volcanic fields all around the cones."
