Jeal Mary

Mary Jeal 1931-2005

Mary was born in Wellington and grew up there. Her early career was as an illustrator and she retained a passion for art throughout her life. Her interest in archaeology came while resident in Gisborne through involvement in Aileen Fox's excavation at Tiromoana in 1974.

Mary subsequently became the site recording filekeeper for Hawkes Bay and a very active recorder of sites - in associaiton with Aileen and her husand Mick and encourager of others in the same activity.

Mary served on the NZAA Council, had two years as President and was on the archaeology committee of the Historic Places Trust as the NZAA representative. She was an enthusiastic advocate of site protection and of good management practice, particularly in relation to Otatara Pa.

She retired to Coromandel in 1991.
