Ross Dependency

The Ross Dependency is the part of Antarctica administered by New Zealand.

It has many sites from the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration, a good many of which have been subject to archaeological investigation as part of their conservation.

The area is cnetred on McMurdo Sound. McMurdo Sound is ice free in summer which attracted early explorers and continues to make the area of modern interest as an area for scientific bases.


Canterbury Museum has the largest collection of material from Antarctic sites.

Important heritage sites in the Antarctic typicaly are Antarctic Specially Protected Areas. A permit is needed to enter these areas.
