Railway

New Zealand has a substantial rail heritage dating from early provincial lines through early private mainline ventures and the state railway system.

Forestry was a substantial user of light railway lines for moving logs and product.

There are numerous railway heritage organisations, mostly concentrating on steam locomotives, and nostalgia journeys available over both preserved track and mainline track. New Zealand does not have a national railway museum but the numerous enthusiast run organisations and local transport museums such as Motat in Auckland and Ferrymead in Christchurch are a good substitute.

Outstanding railway archaeology includes the Otago Rail Trail, the Rimutaka Incline and the Karangahake Gorge.
