What -

Three gun emplacements put in place just before the second world war. They housed 6 inch guns. Camps and magazines were other features on the island related to the battery. A fire control position was on the summit of Rangitoto. They were supplemented by larger guns on Waiheke only late in the war - see [Archaeopedia].

What else to do there -

Motutapu has many small Maori archaeological sites which are easily found by walking along the ridges. They are typically pit and terrace sites. There are also pa - mostly on the coast. There is a ship graveyard at the NE corner of Rangitoto. At Rangitoto Wharf there is a small cottage museum - Bach 38 Museum at Rangitoto Wharf - concentrating on the bach culture at the island.
