Jolly Bob
Robert (Bob) G W Jolly 1906-1990

Bob was an artefact collector who became an amateur archaeologist. In his career he was a dairy farmer and insurance agent. Bob was an early member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association and was associated with excavations run from Auckland University from the inception of archaeology there. He features in the reminiscences of the time (See index to Digging into History) and in the campfire songs (see LP Sweat in the Sun Mate, Fernfire Singers, Garry Law, Sue Bulmer).
He had little formal education - happily contrasting his standard six certificate with those of the "academics" he sometimes scorned. He held very conservative social views, in contrast to the often liberal views of the archaeologists he was associating with but there was mutual tollerance of these. He was generous in offering the use of his and wife Beryl's beach houses on the Coromandel to people with an archaeological interest.
He knew the sites of the Coromandel Peninsula well, was concerned about their loss to development and encourged others to research them.
His collection is in the Auckland Museum.
