The ruins associated with the Kawau Island Mine include a sandstone building built to house the steam engine and pump which kept the mine free of water. It was built in 1854 during an attempt to remove water from the mines, it is similar to engine houses found in Cornwall from where many of the Kawau miners came. The Engine House is located beside the mine workings at Mine Point.
