Alastair Buist was a doctor who resided at Hawera. His professional training was at Otago University, where he was a swiming blue in 1941.

In the late 1950's and early 1960s he undertook archaeological excavations around Taranaki particulalry ont he little known archic sites in the area. He also undertook site surveying concentrating on pa throughout the region and published a monograph on the pa in North Taranaki. Buist's contribution to Taranaki archaeology is well summarised in Walton (2000).

Alastair Buist was a doctor who resided at Hawera. His professional training was at Otago University, where he was a swiming blue in 1941.

In the late 1950's and early 1960s he undertook archaeological excavations around Taranaki particulalry ont he little known archic sites in the area. He also undertook site surveying concentrating on pa throughout the region and published a monograph on the pa in North Taranaki. Buist's contribution to Taranaki archaeology is well summarised in Walton (2000).

He also took part in Green and Davidson's 1960s research project in Western Samoa.

He was Editor of the New Zealand Archaeological Association's Newsletter for 17 years, from 1962-1978.

Buist's excavation records for Kumara Kaiamo and Ohawe are in Puke Ariki Link, as are the artefacts from his excavations.

The Alastair Buist Memorial Award is available for ex pupils of Hawera High School to study medicine at Otago University.
