Ross Dependency

The Ross Dependency is the part of Antarctica administered by New Zealand.

It has many sites from the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, a good many of which have been subject to archaeological investigation as part of their conservation. New Zealand based archaeologists have been prominent in this work.

The Ross dependancy is centered on McMurdo Sound. McMurdo Sound is ice free in summer which attracted early explorers and continues to make the area of modern interest as an area for scientific bases.

Canterbury Museum has the largest collection of historic material from Antarctic sites.

Important heritage sites in the Antarctic typicaly are Antarctic Specially Protected Areas. A permit is needed to enter these areas.
