The Buried Village - Te Wairoa

Tarawera Rd., Rotorua.

The village was a thriving site of residence of Maori and Pakeha servicing the Tarawera tourist route until it was destroyed in the 1886 Tarawera eruption.

This is a museum and an archaeological site. Much of the site has been excavated and the sites of many of the former buildings can be visited. The museum interpretation is of high standard.

This is a private facility so the entrance fees are high by normal institutional standards.

There is a book by Gordon Ell about the village The Buried Village of Te Wairoa.
